Els canvis que ha experimentat el litoral de Barcelona des de mitjans segle XX fins avui són clau per entendre l'impuls transformador de la ciutat. Del diàleg entre la ciutat i el seu litoral sorgeix la Barcino romana, la ciutat emmurallada, la Barcelona burgesa de finals del segle XIX, la metròpoli proletària de les migraciones del segle XX i l'urbs cospomopolita dels Jocs Olímpics i el Fòrum Universal de le sCultures. El punt de partida d'aquest llibre és un Estudio de la zona marítima que l'any 1946 va realitzar el Ministerio de la Vivienda. En aquest treball es fa un repàs exhaustiu dels habitatges que ocupaven la primera línia de mar, els seus estadants, l'activitat econòmica, les infraestructures i les relacions veïnals. Des d'aquí eixamplem la visió cercant què queda de l'activitat pesquera i marinera, i com és la Barcelona que sempre ha viscut, i viu, de cara el mar. The changes that have taken place along Barcelona's shoreline from the mid-20th century to the present are keys to understanding the city's transformational impetus. The sea is the point of departure and arrival for the construction of Barcelona, true child of Mediterranean civilisation. Out of the dialogue between the city and its shoreline emerged the Roman Barcino, the walled city, the bourgeois Barcelona of the late 19th century, the proletariat metropolis of the 20th century immigration and the cosmopolitan centre of the Olympic Games and the Universal Forum of Cultures. This book takes as its starting point a 1946 study of the maritime zone realised by the Ministerio de la Vivienda. The study makes an exhaustive review of the dwellings that once occupied the shoreline, their inhabitants, economic activity, infrastructures and neighbourhood life. From there, we broaden our sights to examine what remains of fishing and maritime activity, and what the Barcelona is like that has always lived with its face to the sea.
